State from the campaign for the acquittal of Sergio and Víctor
Sergio and Víctor were arrested on the 18th July after one of various spontaneous protests carried out by the people of Madrid at the Partido Popular’s (Spain’s ruling right wing political party) headquarters on the street Calle Génova. This demonstration took place after documents emerged shedding light on corruption within the party (the famous “Bárcenas Papers”).
That day hundreds of people peacefully marched through Madrid’s city centre until they arrived at Plaza Cibeles (site of the city hall), where riot police received their usual orders to put an end to the protest by charging indiscriminately at protestors. Our comrades Sergio and Victor were arrested during that charge and, as in many other repression cases, a crude police set-upwas initiated with the aim of intimidating those who fight for a better world.
The accusations are outrageous: both are threatened with a year and a half in prison and liability for compensation for various injuries to police officers. These injuries have not been verified by any medical tribunal, only by the officers’ own private medical insurance. As per usual, despite their account being full of lies and contradictions, neither the prosecutors not the judges have put a halt to the case in its initial phase.
Various support groups have accompanied our comrades on this long path, in a situation that offers yet another example of the unjust system in which we have been condemned to live.Police set ups are just another strategy used by the state to demobilise activists with a visible public profile. Because of this we think it is vital that we keep our political commitment strong and immediately organise mutual support.
Police set ups are not isolated or infrequent. Apart from the famous case of Alfon (Spanish communist recently imprisoned due to a police set up), more comrades face even higher sentences and will be tried in coming months: Ángel, comrade of the CNT (anarcho-syndicalist trade union) and of “Action against repression”, faces eight and a half years in prison; Isabel, of the housing group in the neighbourhood of Tetuán, faces 3 years; Boro, a journalist well known from La Haine, faces 6 years. And this is only one of repression’s many faces: every day we come up against arbitrary arrests, attacks, torture, baseless fines….
We are only strong if we stay united and practice active solidarity, making our values into our weapons on a daily basis in order to achieve another – both possible and increasingly necessary – world.
The trial of our two comrades takes place at 09:30am on the 14th October in the Madrid Criminal Court (Calle Julián Camarillo 11). But they won’t be alone; hundreds of us will be at their side demanding their acquittal.
We can’t allow this violence to be exercised against us, this repression of our liberty, as is being attempted against Sergio and Víctor.
If we are repressed for the struggle, we will extend our solidarity.
Freedom for political prisoners!
